Workshops

Greg periodically teaches workshops as the opportunities present themselves.

His philosophy in teaching is to share his own artistic journey, determine where each student is in his or her own evolution and assist them in acquiring the necessary skills to reach their personal goals. He accomplishes this via lecture, explaining the need to reach beyond simply seeing and representing a picture and describing the process of problem solving. That is, by making use of the elements involved in painting – color, value, texture, edges, composition and drawing, he reveals his vision for what it takes to go beyond mere picture to work of art. However, most of the workshop time is spent with students painting and Greg offering critiques and advice. He also spends some time doing demonstrations.

 

Greg tries to convey to the students that painting from the heart, or getting into the “zone” as some like to call it, is not the absence of brain function, but rather it is absolute concentration. Many college professors try to initiate beginning art students into the “zone”. But Greg believes that mastery of the problem solving elements is essential before any quality work can be accomplished while in the “zone”. Even then, rarely does an advanced professional artist find the “zone” and usually only realizes he has been there after the fact.
